Amorosi

Province: Benevento · Region: Campania · Population: 2,836 · Postal code: 82031

Amorosi was born out of a dead town. The earthquake of 1349 destroyed Telesia and drove sulphurous vapours out of the ground that made the air unbreathable: the survivors came down here, to the plain between the Volturno and the Calore, and founded the village. The name is still uncertain — medieval documents write Amerusii — and the best guess traces it to a Lombard nobleman called Amoroso. In 1596 there were about one hundred and fifty inhabitants. Then came the Caracciolo, marquesses of Amorosi, and it was as their guest that in 1734 Charles of Bourbon slept here while he was taking the Kingdom of Naples: a street is still called via Paribella after the way it was decked out for his arrival.

To stand between two rivers is to stand on bridges, and in war bridges are bombed. In September 1943 the Americans hit the bridges over the Calore and the Volturno and the German command installed in a palace in the centre; the Germans, pulling back, burned palazzo Piscitelli and palazzo Chianese and mined the two bridges the bombs had missed. It was then British engineers of the Eighth Army who threw an iron span across the gutted piers of the Calore, and the Naples-Foggia railway worked again. At the end of the war Amorosi was the comune in the province with the most dead and the most damage. Between 2022 and 2024, digging for the electrical substation of the Naples-Bari high-speed line, 88 Iron Age burials came to light in the Ranzano district: the same crossing place, almost three thousand years ago.
