Telese Terme celebrates Saint Stephen the Protomartyr on 26 December.
The earthquake of 1349 did not merely bring Telesia down: it opened mofettes in the ground, gas vents that made the air unbreathable. The town emptied, the bishops left, and in 1612 the diocese was moved to Cerreto Sannita — the petition records that the canons, to reach the place, were set upon by thieves in the wood of Monte Pugliano. Of the cathedral there remains the bell tower, which since 2020 has been on the town's coat of arms.
The same sulphurous waters that had driven everyone away later rebuilt the place. Analysed in the nineteenth century by Stanislao Cannizzaro among others, the chemist of atomic weight, they proved to be curative: the spa was inaugurated in 1883. Telese, until then a hamlet of Solopaca, became an independent municipality in 1934, and in 1992, after a referendum, added the word Terme to its name.
