Feast of San Rocco
📅 Every year, on 18 August
On 18 August Arpaise, a municipality of 830 inhabitants in the province of Benevento, celebrates its patron San Rocco.
Until 1833 Arpaise was a hamlet: the comune was called Terranova Fossaceca, and the town hall stood there. In 1834 the seat moved here, and the village that had been a hamlet gave its name to the whole comune. Terranova, where the ruins of a Norman castle remain, had been refounded in 1453 by Francesco Orsini after the old Fossaceca was destroyed.
The name is said to come from refugees who arrived from Arpi, in Apulia, or from the Greek arpax, which means bird of prey. On the coat of arms there is a lime tree with a lion rearing beside it. The war memorial is a real tank, an M36, with a large iron A next to it. In the woods around, white truffle is found.
