Chianche

Province: Avellino · Region: Campania · Population: 551 · Postal code: 83010

In the Middle Ages it was called Chianca, from the Latin planca: the plancae were the polygonal stones the Romans paved their roads with, and the name came from them. The comune is made of three separate cores — Chianche, Chianchetelle, which was a comune of its own until the nineteenth century, and San Pietro, now called Irpino — scattered over a hillside in the valley of the river Sabato. Among the oak and chestnut woods lie the vineyards of Greco di Tufo.

The castle above the village is probably Norman, but it appears in a document only in 1301; from then on the fief changed hands a dozen times, from the de Planca to the Perelli, until feudalism ended in 1806. In the square stands a fountain of local limestone, built in 1891 together with the first municipal aqueduct: on top it carries the bust of Gennaro Sambiase Sanseverino, duke of San Donato, who was mayor of Naples and a friend of Garibaldi. Above the Stretto di Barba watches a neo-Gothic tower.
