Castelfranco in Miscano

Province: Benevento · Region: Campania · Population: 935 · Postal code: 82022

Along the road that climbs to the village the bolle della Malvizza steam, the largest group of mud volcanoes in the southern Apennines: water and clay boiling cold on an open plateau, and the name, in dialect, is that of the blackbird. The castle that gives the village its name belonged to a Frank, or perhaps «franco» meant free from taxes.

Castelfranco is the easternmost municipality of the Benevento province, and it got there late: it lay in the Principato Ultra, in 1811 it passed to the district of Bovino in the Capitanata, and only in 1861 did it enter the newly created province of Benevento. On the via Francigena, which here follows the Roman Traiana, stand the farmstead of Tre Fontane and the memory of the fortress of Crepacuore, which the village had to help repair.
