Feast of Saint Prosper
📅 Every year, on 8 August
On 8 August Faeto, a municipality of 644 inhabitants in the province of Foggia, celebrates its patron Saint Prosper (san Prospero).
At Faeto and in neighbouring Celle di San Vito people speak Franco-Provençal: they are the only minority of that language in the whole of central and southern Italy, recognised by the state under the law of 1999. In the Casa del Capitano, a fifteenth-century building in the old centre, is the ethnographic museum of Franco-Provençal culture. And to the south Faeto borders another language island, the Arbëreshë one of Greci: two minority languages that touch.
The name comes from the beeches: behind the village lies a tall wood in which beech dominates. At 820 metres Faeto is the highest municipality in Apulia and the furthest from the sea, and within its territory rises Monte Cornacchia, which at 1151 metres is the highest peak in the region. The village's product is ham, from pigs raised in the open, and a festival is devoted to it twice a year, in February and in August.
