Saint John the Baptist and the Living Nativity of Porti
📅 Every year, on the last Sunday of August
Faicchio celebrates Saint John the Baptist on the last Sunday of August, in the church dedicated to him.
Faicchio has 3,698 inhabitants on the slopes of the Matese, above the Titerno stream, and the name comes from the Latin fagus, the beech: a small beech wood. On the summit of Monte Acero the megalithic walls of the Samnites still run, from the sixth century before Christ, defending the citadel: it was probably the southernmost outpost of the Pentri. On Monte Erbano the Lombards carved out of a natural cave a church dedicated to Saint Michael.
In 1612 Gabriele De Martino bought almost the whole territory from the royal treasury, took the title of duke and turned the castle into a residence: it has been called the ducal castle ever since. The earthquake of 1688 razed many houses. On 18 January 1729, gathered in public parliament, the citizens decided to bring twelve demands before the courts of Naples against their duke: that he stop interfering in local justice, stop having people arrested and shut in the castle prison without authorisation, stop requisitioning food and materials by force.
