Feast of Saint Nicholas of Myra
📅 Every year, on 6 December
On 6 December Forchia celebrates its patron Saint Nicholas of Myra; the municipal territory preserves the Cisterne Sannitiche.
The name comes from the Latin forculae, the forks, and points to the Caudine Forks: in 321 before Christ the Samnites shut two Roman legions in a gorge and made them pass under the yoke. Where it happened is disputed among many villages of the Sannio, but only Forchia has obtained a municipal coat of arms with the yoke on it, against the opinion of a good many historians, on the strength of its name and of the ruins of a monastery called Santa Maria del Giogo, Saint Mary of the Yoke.
In 849 the emperor Louis, dividing the principality of Benevento, left Forchia to Salerno: from then on the village was the border between two principalities. The earthquake of 5 December 1456 levelled it. From Arpaia it separated twice: as a parish in 1654, as a comune only in 1811, when a decree registered it separately for the first time.
