Saint George the Martyr, patron of the land of the Roman aqueduct
📅 Every year, on 23 April
Airola celebrates Saint George the Martyr on 23 April.
The water that feeds the cascade of the Royal Palace of Caserta starts here: the Fizzo spring lies in Airola's territory, and from there the Carolino aqueduct crosses half of Campania. The feudal lord Bartolomeo di Capua offered it to the king, and in 1754 Charles of Bourbon returned the favour by granting Airola the title of city: the decree names the Fizzo water explicitly.
Vanvitelli, who was building the palace and the aqueduct, also designed the façade of the church of the Annunziata, completed in 1786; the bell tower, thirty-five metres tall, had gone up in 1735. Airola appears for the first time in a document of 997, and the name is thought to come from a Lombard fief, the feudum Airoaldi.
