Saint Bartholomew, patron of Vairano Patenora
📅 Every year, on 24 August
Vairano Patenora celebrates Saint Bartholomew on 24 August, in the church dedicated to him.
On the arms of Vairano there is a motto that is a claim: besieging Vairano he got nothing. The phrase comes from the Chronica of Richard of San Germano and refers to 1193, when the imperial troops and those of the abbot of Montecassino laid siege to the castle and were driven off by count Roger of Chieti, who held for king Tancred.
The other claim is more recent and bigger. The meeting between Garibaldi and Victor Emmanuel the Second of the twenty-sixth of October 1860, the one everyone calls the meeting of Teano, according to many sources took place here, at Vairano Scalo, at the Taverna della Catena. The dispute with Teano was settled by a decree of the prime minister in 1967, which listed that building as protected national heritage: a copy of the decree stands on a marble slab, in the monument in piazza Unità d'Italia. In the same tavern, later turned into a small barracks, the fascist authorities made Antonio Gramsci spend two nights while taking him before the fascist court, in the cold and with almost nothing to eat.
