Caserta CE

Region: Campania · 104 towns · Population: 904,921

The coat of arms Caserta uses was not designed for it: it belonged to Terra di Lavoro, the old province whose territory this one largely took over and whose heraldry it inherited. The provincial capital sits about 36 kilometres by road north of Naples, and the 104 municipalities under it stretch from the inland towns to a 45-kilometre run of coast that faces the Gulf of Gaeta end to end.

Almost everyone comes for a single building. The Palace of Caserta, built for the Bourbon kings who ruled Naples, was the largest palace put up anywhere in Europe during the 18th century and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997; the park alone will take half a day. The province deserves more than that, though: Santa Maria Capua Vetere and Aversa, Maddaloni and Marcianise inland, Sessa Aurunca and Mondragone out towards the sea.
