The Rule of Saint Benedict burned here. In 883 the Saracens of the colony on the Garigliano destroyed Montecassino and killed abbot Bertario; the monks escaped and took refuge at Teano, in the monastery of San Benedetto, carrying with them part of the abbey's treasure and the original of the Rule written by the founder. They stayed here about thirty years, until a fire destroyed the monastery and with it the Rule. What they did carry away, when they went home, were two of the four Placiti cassinesi, drawn up in the comital curia of Teano: the Placito of the year 963 and the memoratorio, among the very first documents in which formulas in the Italian vernacular appear. They are still in the archive of Montecassino.

The city is far older than that story. It was founded in the fourth century before Christ by the Sidicini, an Oscan people, as their capital, in a strategic position on the via Latina between Suessa and Cales, and stretches of the pre-Roman walls still survive. Having become a Roman municipium, it kept the right to strike its own coinage, and Strabo calls it the greatest city of inland Campania after Capua: it had a theatre-temple seating some five thousand, an amphitheatre, a forum and baths. Then, on 26 October 1860, Teano became «the city of the historic meeting» between Garibaldi and Victor Emmanuel II — though the exact spot where it happened is still argued about.
