Casamarciano

Province: Naples · Region: Campania · Population: 3,272 · Postal code: 80032

Casamarciano has 3,272 inhabitants on the hills north-east of Vesuvius. There are three explanations for the name: a Marciano who owned houses here, an official of the same name, or a temple dedicated to Mars — Casa Martiana, then Casa Marciana. The village was one of the sixteen casali of Nola: when the lordship of the Orsini ended in 1529, Nola became a free city and with its casali formed a single great università, a sort of super-comune. It did not last: in 1643 the feudal lord Giulio Mastrilli bought most of it, and the casali began making themselves independent one by one.

Here the hearth tax was paid, the family levy instituted by Alfonso I in the fifteenth century, and the registers with the hearth counts of Nola and its district no longer exist: German troops burned them in 1943, setting fire to villa Montesano, at San Paolo Bel Sito, where they had been taken for safekeeping. Of what the people of Casamarciano did in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries little is known: poplars and mulberries, vineyards on the hill and on the flat, chestnut woods for timber and charcoal, and a trade that brought grain from Puglia to sell it elsewhere.
