Tufino

Province: Naples · Region: Campania · Population: 3,785 · Postal code: 80030

Tufino has 3,785 inhabitants in the plain of Nola, where traces of centuriation recall the colonies of Roman veterans. At the end of 1995, at Schiava, the walls and the necropolis of a sixth-century church came to light. From 1292 to 1533 the territory belonged to the Orsini county of Nola, with the hamlets of Tufino, Vignola, Risigliano and Ponticchio; then the feudal rights passed from hand to hand until they reached the Mastrilli.

At Ponticchio the Mastrilli had their palace, and from that single house came three very different figures: Isabella, a poet and playwright, who entered the Arcadia under the name of Elinda Zelea; Francesco Saverio, archbishop of Taranto; and Marzio, minister for the Bourbons, for Joseph Bonaparte and for Murat, who as plenipotentiary signed the treaty of Campoformio under the name of Marquis de Gallo, beside that of Napoleon. After the Napoleonic age two Carbonari societies worked here, «La Costanza di Catone» and «Gli Ordoni al Ponte».
