Ischia

The largest island in the Gulf of Naples is a gentle volcano that has given warm water for twenty-eight centuries: the Greek settlers of Pithecusa — the West's oldest Greek settlement — already knew its springs, and today the thermal parks stepping down to the sea remain the reason all Europe winters and summers here. The Aragonese Castle, on an islet joined by a bridge, is the symbol everyone photographs.

Sant'Angelo, the pedestrian village in the south, is its sweetest postcard; Mount Epomeo repays the climb with the entire gulf. The novelistic pair of "My Brilliant Friend" renewed the myth: Ischia never goes out of fashion.
