Italian Capital of Culture 2022 — the first island ever chosen — Procida is the least tamed of the gulf's sisters: the Corricella, an amphitheatre of fishermen's houses in pink, yellow and pale blue, remains as Massimo Troisi's "Il Postino" filmed it in 1994. Elsa Morante set "Arturo's Island" here.
Terra Murata, the fortified village on top, keeps the abbey of San Michele and the decommissioned prison of Palazzo d'Avalos, now open to visits. Four square kilometres of lemons, boats and drying laundry: holiday here is subtraction — and that is its strength.
