The patron of Ischia is an islander: Carlo Gaetano Calosirto, born on Ischia on 15 August 1654, who became an Alcantarine friar minor under the name of John Joseph of the Cross. He died in Naples on 5 March 1734 and was proclaimed a saint by Gregory XVI on 26 May 1839. On the island he is called the fairest flower of Aenaria, using Ischia's ancient name.
His liturgical memorial is 5 March, but the patronal feast does not fall on that day: it is held on the first Sunday of September, while the season is still open.
