The church of San Marco is a neoclassical religious building in Pozzuoli, on a Greek-cross plan.
What to see
The church was built to a design by the engineer Nicola Forte in 1933, replacing an earlier place of worship dating from the seventeenth century and demolished in 1929 for land reclamation works. The high altar and some sacred furnishings of the old church were kept and found a place in the new building.
In the palace next to the church, on via Sacchini, on 6 November 1936 Bishop Alfonso Castaldo inaugurated a nursery school and the girls' section of the episcopal liceo-ginnasio; the building is today the seat of the diocesan Caritas.
Visiting
The church is on via Sacchini, in Pozzuoli, next to the seat of the diocesan Caritas. The sources consulted give no opening hours or times of services: these should be checked.
Our editors' tip
Above the high altar look for the wooden statue of Saint Mark, made around the turn of the sixteenth to the seventeenth century, and on the left altar the seventeenth-century canvas of the Madonna of Montevergine, a faithful period copy of the original kept in the Marian sanctuary.
