Beneath Bacoli sleeps the largest Roman cistern ever built: the Piscina Mirabilis, a cathedral of water on forty-eight columns that supplied the imperial fleet of Misenum. It is only the beginning of Bacoli's Phlegraean Fields: the Cento Camerelle chambers, the harbour of Miseno from which Pliny sailed toward the eruption of 79 AD, the cape with its lighthouse closing the gulf.
On lake Fusaro floats the Casina Vanvitelliana, the royal hunting pavilion that looks like an origami on the water. Between seafood restaurants on the harbour and sunsets from Miseno, Bacoli is the most scenographic corner of the Phlegraean coast — and Neapolitans know it well.
