On the hills that climb from the Campi Flegrei towards the Camaldoli, Marano is a hinge town in the area north of Naples: a farming village for centuries — cherries and vines marked its tradition — today it is one of the most populous comuni in the metropolitan ring. The yellow Neapolitan tuff, quarried here for generations, built half a city and left cavities and farmhouses behind.
Beneath that tuff, though, lies a very long story: along the route that leads to San Rocco, settlements eight thousand years old have been found. In Roman times the Via Campana passed through here, linking the port of Pozzuoli to Capua, and Marano flourished: what remains is the Mausoleum of Ciaurro, the most important funerary work in Campania, and five statues now in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples, among them the freedman Dama and his wife Terzia, both of Tiberius' household. From the hills the eye takes in the gulf: Pozzuoli, the Solfatara and the sea at Bacoli are a few kilometres away, Naples half an hour.
