Saint John the Baptist, patron of the Shrine of Sant'Agnello Abate
📅 Every year, on 24 June
Roccarainola celebrates Saint John the Baptist on 24 June.
Of the hamlets that made up Roccarainola in the early Middle Ages almost all the names are known: Fellino, Sasso, Mediana, Barcano, Urbano, Materno, Gargani, Ravinula, Puzano, Maimano. Almost all: there is one, up in the hills, whose name is no longer known. At Fontanelle, instead, there is a Roman aqueduct dug as filtering tunnels, what the East calls a qanat.
The two castles, that of Roccarainola and the Castelluccia of Fellino, corresponded to two separate fiefs, brought together only in 1315 by the lord Martino II. The list of lords who followed one another from then until 1806 is very long and almost unbroken. On 18 July 1943 an Allied bombing killed about thirty-five people: the monument in the square dates from 2012.
