Feast of Saint Nicholas
📅 Every year, on 6 December (Saint Nicholas) and 13 June (Saint Anthony)
Alfano celebrates Saint Nicholas on 6 December; the other patron, Saint Anthony, is celebrated on 13 June.
The arms are a letter: a black A in Roman lapidary character on a gold field, with two red balls at its sides. The name would come from a Roman family name, Alfius, and perhaps further back from the Greek Alfeiòs. The village appears in the records for the first time in 1309.
After that the fief changed hands continually: from the Sanseverino to the king's demesne, in 1427 to the Dal Verme, in 1496 to a Carafa, back to the Dal Verme — who in 1566 kept the jurisdiction after a lawsuit —, in 1588 to Paolo Brancaccio, in 1594 to a Carrano of Diano, and from 1619 to the Bernalla, who held it almost without a break through the eighteenth century. The village lies on the flanks of monte Gelbison, inside the Cilento park.
