Laurito

Province: Salerno · Region: Campania · Population: 843 · Postal code: 84050

For more than a hundred years this village governed others: from 1811 to 1860 it was the head town of its circondario, then, with a united Italy, the head town of its mandamento until 1927. Today a little more than eight hundred people live here, and of the offices nothing is left.

The fief had been given by Robert Guiscard to one of his knights, to keep an eye on the area together with the castles of Rofrano and Alfano. That people lived well here afterwards is shown by the frescoes of the chapel of San Filippo: the oldest are from the second half of the thirteenth century, and having them made cost money.
