Atrani

Province: Salerno · Region: Campania · Population: 887 · Postal code: 84010

With barely twelve hectares Atrani is the smallest municipality in Italy, and for centuries it was the place where the duke of Amalfi was made: in the chapel of San Salvatore de Birecto he was given the birecto, the cap of power, and only the people of Amalfi and of Atrani had the right to elect the heads of the duchy or to drive them out.

In the thirteenth century Manfred, to punish a village that had sided with the pope, sent a thousand sailors from Alexandria: the Atranesi fled to Amalfi and the newcomers stayed for years, and something of their cadence is still heard in the local dialect. The tidal wave of 25 November 1343, which Petrarch described in a letter, ended the great season of Amalfi and Atrani. A letter of Pope Gregory the Great, of 596, is the first to name the village.
