Conca dei Marini

Province: Salerno · Region: Campania · Population: 730 · Postal code: 84010

After Atrani it is the smallest municipality in Campania by area, and for centuries it was the town of seafarers: the chronicles say it came to muster twenty-seven great galleons, and its captains put in at Venice, Trieste, Constantinople, Smyrna and later Odessa. The first mayor whose name is known dates from 1270 and was called Bonaventura Spizzatortolo. The Marini in the name arrived only after Italian unification, to tell the village apart from the other Conche in Italy and to recall who lived there.

The sea brought the Turks as well: in June 1543 five galliots landed at the cape of Conca and sacked the village, stripping the church of San Pancrazio, which stayed shut and forbidden for years. The tuna fishery, set up around the eighteenth century, held out until 1956. In 1928 the municipality was joined to Furore by decree and began to exist on its own again only in 1947. Below the village opens the Grotta dello Smeraldo, a karst cave flooded by the sea.
