Between 1412 and 1420 the inhabitants of Fasanella left in a body and came up here, where Pandolfo di Fasanella had built a castle in the thirteenth century. The hamlets around, Clitino and Fornari, emptied too. That the people brought their church with them is shown by two parchments of San Michele, one from Clitino and one from here: they list in part the same property.

The name, writes a historian of the eighteenth century, would come from the air: good enough to keep the inhabitants fresh in the face, with a fine look about them. Others trace it to a Lucanian hero, Berlisguardo, said to have killed the king of Epirus on the Acheron. In the convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie, of 1512, lived friar Lorenzo Ganganelli, who later became Pope Clement XIV.
