Castel San Lorenzo

Province: Salerno · Region: Campania · Population: 2,632 · Postal code: 84049

The old centre is medieval, and at the top of it stands the palace of the Carafa princes, built between 1272 and 1337. Of the medieval churches only the bell tower of the ruined church of the Rosario survives: the ones in use were put up in the eighteenth century at the edge of the old village. Outside the built-up area, among the vineyards along the Calore, stands the small sanctuary of the Madonna della Stella, built in 1100 and the oldest church here, which is opened for worship only for the novena, up to the first Sunday of August.

The church of Santa Maria dell'Assunta, finished in 1713, takes its name from the statue in the niche of its high altar, identical to the one in the sanctuary on the Gelbison, above Novi Velia. Since the fifties the village has emptied in stages: first emigration abroad, to Switzerland and Germany; then, in the sixties, Rome and the north; finally the coastal towns of the province, Salerno, Battipaglia, Paestum, Agropoli. What has stayed is the wine: since 1991 the territory has had a denomination of its own.
