The name means «against the sun», but not in the way one would think: the Alburni mountains stand in front of the village and take away its morning light. A scholar of the eighteenth century derived it from Genestrosola, the name a papal bull of 1168 gives to the monastery of San Nicola, which he read as gens extra solem, people outside the sun.

In 1246 the local lord, Pandolfo di Fasanella, joined the barons' conspiracy against Frederick II. The imperial troops passed through here too; the conspirators shut themselves in the castle of Capaccio and in July, their water gone, surrendered. Frederick took a hundred and fifty prisoners and punished them in ways still recounted. Pandolfo escaped to Rome, to the pope, and twenty years later, when the wind changed, took everything back.
