Albanella

Province: Salerno · Region: Campania · Population: 6,503 · Postal code: 84044

Albanella was born of a flight: in the eleventh century — local historians say in 1003 — refugees from Paestum climbed this hill to get out of reach of the Saracen raids. They did not choose the spot at random: the oldest core stands on the hidden side, the one you cannot see from the sea. The name, on the other hand, comes from the trees: alvanello, in dialect, is the birch.

The municipal arms came by adoption. On the doorway of the former Carmelite convent there is a relief of 1725 with two cypresses and two stars, probably an old episcopal emblem; in time the village took it for its own, and today it is the civic coat of arms, with the rivers Sele and Calore added. On the San Chirico hill, since 2004, ten wind turbines have been turning, visible from the Amalfi coast.
