Salvitelle lies on the southern slopes of the Eremita-Marzano massif, on the side of the Apennines that looks towards Basilicata, in a position commanding the whole Vallo di Diano. It is a small village in a zone of high seismic risk, and its administrative history shows it tied to a larger centre: from 1811 it was part of the district of Caggiano, and to Caggiano it remained attached, as a mandamento, until the early twentieth century.

What surprises, in a village of this size, is the number of noble houses: the Baronial palace, the eighteenth-century Grassibelli, the Mucci, the Romanzi, the Briganti-Bonavoglia. A sign that here, between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, there was a landowning class solid enough to build. The churches tell the same chronology: the chapel of San Sebastiano is of the mid sixteenth century, that of the Most Holy Rosary of 1740, the parish church of Santo Spirito of the early nineteenth. Even the railway station says something about the place: it is called Romagnano-Vietri-Salvitelle, and serves three comuni in two different regions.
