Santomenna

Province: Salerno · Region: Campania · Population: 473 · Postal code: 84020

The name comes from Saint Menas of Egypt, and the village owes it to a Byzantine general: in 554 Narses camped here before the battle of Compsa against the Goths and had a church built to the protector of the Byzantines, to win fate over to his side. A local legend tells instead of an Egyptian soldier named Menas who in 303, fleeing Diocletian's persecution, is said to have come this far and founded a monastery.

The church of Santa Menna appears in a privilege of Pope Innocent III of 1200, and the land in an even older deed of sale, of 893, made by the abbot of the monastery. Until after Italian unification the village was called Santa Menna, in the feminine. The Irpinia earthquake of 1980 destroyed it completely. Among its historic buildings are the Capuchin friary of the sixteenth century and the public wash-house known as Lu Canali.
