Tramonti

Province: Salerno · Region: Campania · Population: 4,080 · Postal code: 84010

Thirteen villages scattered over uneven ground make up this municipality, and the name says exactly that: intra montes, the land between the mountains. The town hall does not stand in a place called Tramonti but in the hamlet of Polvica. Some of the villages bear the name of their first inhabitant — Cesarano from a Cesare, Paterno from a Patritius, Polvica from a Populeus — while Pietre is so called for the rocky nature of the ground. It is the largest municipality of the Amalfi Coast and is considered its green lung: since 1997, with the other towns of the coast, it has been inscribed on the UNESCO world heritage list.

An old tradition holds that the tramontana wind takes its name from this very place, because Tramonti lies north of Maiori, and that the name spread with the compasses that the Amalfitans were the first in the West to use. What is certain is that Tramonti belonged to the duchy of Amalfi and defended it: in 1127 its castrum of Montalto beat off a first Norman assault and fell to the second, and with that loss the duchy set down its last hopes. In 1260 Manfred granted Tramonti in fief to Giovanni da Procida, and the place was then reckoned at a hundred and seventeen hearths; in 1290 Charles II of Anjou gave it to a French knight, Guglielmo Stendardo, marshal of the kingdom, who later left the kingdom without the sovereign's leave and for that had castle and land sequestered.
