The ocarina was born here: Giuseppe Donati invented it, and from Budrio that small terracotta instrument shaped like a goose has travelled half the world — so much so that the town has given it a museum and a group that still plays it.
The other speciality is more recent and less light-hearted: at Vigorso stands the INAIL prosthetics centre, which in 1965 built the world's first working myoelectric hand and has made prostheses for Alex Zanardi and Bebe Vio. In the square stands Quirico Filopanti, secretary of the Roman Republic, credited with the idea of time zones. There are 18,008 residents.
