Camugnano

Province: Bologna · Region: Emilia-Romagna · Population: 2,000 · Postal code: 40032

Between March 1942 and September 1943 the village was a place of free internment: fifty-four refugees were sent here under compulsory residence, all Libyan Jews with British passports, families with many children, and two children were born here. After the German occupation the thirty-eight who remained were taken to Bergen-Belsen and then to Vittel, in France: in July 1944 they were all freed in a prisoner exchange, and by November they were back in Libya.

The two dams changed the mountain: the Brasimone one, finished in 1911, is made of local stone and not of concrete; the Suviana one, of 1932, was the tallest in Italy when it was built. Between 1950 and 1970 Camugnano lost more than half its people, from five thousand six hundred to two thousand five hundred.
