Castel di Casio

Province: Bologna · Region: Emilia-Romagna · Population: 3,479 · Postal code: 40030

On the twentieth of July 1211 Gislimerio, lord of Casio, swore allegiance to the Comune of Bologna in the palace of the local pieve. Bologna then closed the open village inside a stone wall and raised a tower over it: the vicus Casii became the castrum Casii. From then on it was one of Bologna's strongholds in the Apennines, seat of the podestà and of the Captains of the Mountains.

The comune's arms are carved on a stone of 1483 in the palace of the Captains of the Mountains, which is at Vergato: when the Captains' seat moved there, the coat of arms followed them and became Vergato's too. The medieval tower still rises above the roofs and can be seen from the whole Limentra valley; the village lived on the ridge road between Bologna and Florence, and part of Lake Suviana lies in its territory.
