Monghidoro

Province: Bologna · Region: Emilia-Romagna · Population: 3,806 · Postal code: 40063

Before it was called Monghidoro the village was Scaricalasino, and in Bolognese dialect it still is: in 1264 Bologna put a border post here facing Florence, and the donkeys were unloaded so that the goods could be checked. On the old road to Tuscany stood the Osteria del Fantorno, which legend says the papal guards destroyed after a customer found a human finger on his plate.

In 1528 Ramazzotto had the Olivetan monastery of San Michele built here, eight thousand gold ducats, and for three centuries it was the centre of everything. In 1869, to make room for the new bell tower, the portico was pulled down and the road gained forty-five centimetres: with that portico went the last of the sixteenth-century façade. In 1944, freed by the Americans, the village was symbolically annexed to Los Angeles.
