Monte San Pietro

Province: Bologna · Region: Emilia-Romagna · Population: 10,820 · Postal code: 40050

The comune is a scattered one, and the town hall does not stand where the name does: the seat is at Calderino, at the bottom of the Lavino valley, while Monte San Pietro is the castle on the ridge, first mentioned in 1155 in a decree of Gerardo, bishop of Bologna, and again in a brief of Gregory VIII in 1187. Until the sixteenth century the valley was shared among a handful of small hill comuni; a decree of Napoleon united them in 1810, choosing as their head precisely the village on the mountain.

Two events of the twentieth century shifted that balance. On the twentieth of April 1929 the epicentre of the Bologna earthquake fell at Montemaggiore, which was razed to the ground; then, after the war, the hill villages emptied as people moved down into the valley, towards Calderino and Rivabella. The comune holds a bronze medal for military valour for the Resistance: on the twenty-seventh of August 1944 the Nazi-Fascists rounded up thirty people and killed five of them in a ditch at Calderino.
