Neviano degli Arduini

Province: Parma · Region: Emilia-Romagna · Population: 3,691 · Postal code: 43024

Neviano comes from the Latin Naevianus, but in the Parma country there were two Nevianos: the other was called de' Rossi, and to this one, already in the thirteenth century, «degli Arduini» was added, from the name by which the Della Palude lords were known, descendants of an Arduino. The village first appears in 1038, in a document naming a priest called Rimperto living in loco Nuviani.

In 1297 the Comune of Parma decreed that no fortification should be built at Neviano again: the castle was rebuilt all the same, and the Visconti levelled it a century later. Above the hamlet of Sasso, instead, the pieve remains, rebuilt in Romanesque form in 1082, by tradition at the wish of Matilda of Canossa, with an octagonal font recomposed in 1960 from four twelfth-century slabs.
