Vetto

Province: Reggio Emilia · Region: Emilia-Romagna · Population: 1,956 · Postal code: 42020

Vetto is the least populated municipality in the province of Reggio Emilia, and it sits on the right bank of the Enza, in an Apennine cut by torrents: at Atticola the water has carved a real canyon in the limestone, in miniature. The village is not one place but many small settlements, and each has its ancient church: the one at Rosano is recorded as early as 1112, the one at Cola in 1150, the one at Gottano appears in documents of 1213 and has a medieval bell tower.

The other thing that repeats from hamlet to hamlet is the tower house: at Legoreccio there is one built by the Rabotti in the sixteenth century, beside the fifteenth-century Casa dei Terzi and the seventeenth-century court of the Da Palude; at Castellaro one was raised where a small fort of 1313 had stood; others are at Rosano, at Piagnolo and at Spigone. Among the oratories, the one at Gottano is called the Ants' oratory, and the one at Sole Sotto was already there at the time of the plague of 1632; the church at Crovara keeps an Annunciation painted by pupils of Guercino.
