San Pietro in Cerro

Province: Piacenza · Region: Emilia-Romagna · Population: 926 · Postal code: 29010

Out in the flat country of the lower Piacenza plain, the castle of San Pietro in Cerro was built in 1491 on top of an older fortification, at the wish of Bartolomeo Barattieri, who in 1512 would go as Piacenza's ambassador to Pope Julius II. The family held it for five centuries: ownership changed only in 1993.

The municipal coat of arms is the Barattieri one with an addition: beside the two bands charged with three silver dice stands a Turkey oak, the tree that spells out the village's name. Between 1900 and 1923 the village was served by the tramway running from Cremona to Lugagnano; a bus line has taken its place.
