Read more →Piacenza sits in the far north-western corner of Emilia-Romagna, and most of its border is with somewhere else: Lombardy to the north and west, Piedmont beyond that, Liguria and the hinterland of Genoa to the south. Only its eastern side, towards Parma, stays inside the region. The 46 municipalities run from the flat farmland of the Po valley up to the ridges that separate Emilia from the Ligurian coast, and the capital, just over 100,000 people, is the only real city.
Most visitors start in Piacenza itself. West of it, Castel San Giovanni and Borgonovo Val Tidone face the Pavia border; Rivergaro sits on the river Trebbia; Fiorenzuola d'Arda and Carpaneto Piacentino lie along the Via Emilia, the Roman road running towards Parma. No single famous monument holds the province together, which is rather the point of it.
