Bagnara di Romagna

Province: Ravenna · Region: Emilia-Romagna · Population: 2,348 · Postal code: 48031

The first document naming Bagnara is of 7 March 855, the donation of a nobleman of Imola to the archbishop of Ravenna. That Bagnara, though, is gone: on 8 May 1222 the castrum was destroyed in a war between Bologna and Faenza on one side and Imola on the other, and the survivors moved eight hundred metres away, where an oratory of San Giovanni stood. Today's village is that one.

It is the only medieval castrum left whole in the whole Cispadane plain: keep, walls, town gate, ramparts and ditches. In its keep, on 23 September 1494, Caterina Sforza secretly met the duke of Calabria to strike an alliance against the French. The name «di Romagna» was added in 1863, so as not to confuse it with Bagnara Calabra.
