Read more →Ravenna is a small province by number of municipalities, 18 of them for nearly 385,000 residents, which means each one covers a lot of ground, starting with the city of Ravenna itself and its 150,000-plus inhabitants. The territory runs east to the Adriatic and south to the Tuscan border, where it meets the metropolitan area of Florence; inland it flattens out towards Ferrara and Bologna. Beach, farmland and the first Apennine ridges all fit inside an hour's drive.
The reason most people come is the mosaics: San Vitale and the mausoleum of Galla Placidia, a few steps apart in the old centre, are late-Roman work of a quality you will not find anywhere else. Faenza gave its name to faience pottery, Cervia has the sea and its salt pans, and Lugo and Bagnacavallo hold the plain in between.
