Saint Agatha, patron of Sant'Agata sul Santerno
📅 Every year, on 5 February
Sant'Agata sul Santerno celebrates Saint Agatha on 5 February, with co-patron Saint Vincent Ferrer on the fourth Sunday after Easter.
The village began as a Byzantine post on the line that ran from Ferrara to the via Emilia, and from above it can still be seen: a square of a hundred and sixty metres a side, with the moat around it. The pieve, outside the walls, was dedicated to Saint Agatha for good luck, because Catania, the first city the Byzantines had taken back in Italy, bore the same saint's name.
In 1755 a decree allowed two men of Lugo and two of Massa Lombarda to sit in Sant'Agata's public assemblies: it took twenty-three years for the village to have it abolished by the Holy See. The first bridge over the Santerno came in 1802, and in 1815 Murat, in retreat, had it burnt.
