On 7 January 1797, in a hall of the town palace, the delegates of the Cispadane Republic adopted the Italian tricolour for the first time: Reggio Emilia is the city of the flag, and its Sala del Tricolore remembers it with measured, very Emilian pride. Around it spreads a town of porticoes and bicycles that the education world knows well: the "Reggio Approach" of its preschools is studied everywhere.
The table plays at home: Parmigiano Reggiano, lambrusco and the erbazzone chard pie. And the theatres on the main square — the Valli above all — keep a serious musical tradition alive.
