Feast of San Rocco
📅 Every year, on 16 August
On 16 August Monrupino, a municipality of 881 inhabitants in the province of Trieste, celebrates its patron San Rocco.
Above the village, on top of the hill, there is a church inside a fortified enclosure, and beside it a boulder with a mark that tradition says was left by the Virgin: women who could not have children used to rub their bellies against it. Before the church, up there, stood a prehistoric hill fort, and later a refuge for the people whenever armies came through.
On the last Sunday of August, in odd-numbered years, the Karst wedding is celebrated: a marriage in costume, with all the old rites. Here Slovene is spoken more than Italian, and the border is a step away, at the Fernetti crossing. In 1947, with the peace treaty, the comune lost five hamlets, which passed to Yugoslavia and to the comune of Sežana.
