Province of Trieste, Italy: Towns & Things to Do

No Italian province is smaller than Trieste: six municipalities, barely 212 square kilometres, less ground than some single Italian cities cover. The border is a product of the Second World War, when the Karst hinterland passed to Yugoslavia and what remained was this narrow strip between limestone plateau and Adriatic, at the eastern edge of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region. Italian and Slovene are both everyday languages here.

The city of Trieste holds most of it: Piazza Unità d'Italia, the square that opens straight onto the gulf, and Miramare Castle just up the coast. The other 48 kilometres of shoreline are worth the rest of a day. Muggia faces the city from across the water, the last Italian town before Slovenia; Duino Aurisina and Monrupino sit on the Karst plateau, where place names come in two languages and bare rock breaks through the fields.
