Sgonico

Province: Trieste · Region: Friuli Venezia Giulia · Population: 2,077 · Postal code: 34010

The name is Slovene and means belfry: zvonik, which in the local dialect becomes zgonik. It is attested from 1309, but the finest document is the one of 1374, where somebody translated it into Latin and wrote de Champanilo. The coat of arms the comune gave itself in 2007 shows that very bell tower: the one of the church of San Michele Arcangelo.

Sgonico sits in the middle of the Trieste Karst: sinkholes everywhere, and on the surface no water at all except a few ponds. Underneath, instead, there is the Grotta Gigante. The comune's statute puts Slovene on a par with Italian. And there are the osmize: the country houses that open for a few days a year and sell their own wine and whatever they have.
