Feast of Saint Nicholas of Bari
📅 Every year, on 6 December
On 6 December Belmonte Castello celebrates its patron Saint Nicholas of Bari; the municipal territory includes Monte Morrone.
Until 1819 Belmonte belonged to Atina; then it became a casale of Terelle, and only in 1851 did Ferdinand II of the Two Sicilies make it a comune of its own. The name comes from the Latin Bellus Mons, and the second half, Castello, was added to it in 1862. The village stands on top of a hill, in the narrow valley that leads from the val di Comino to the Cassino country.
Until 2014 the comune was in no diocese at all: it lay inside the territorial abbey of Montecassino. Then pope Francis reduced that territory to the abbey church and the monastery alone, and Belmonte passed to the diocese of Sora, which changed its name for the occasion. At Costa Campopiano the remains of a Roman aqueduct are still there.
