Saint Clinius the Abbot, patron of Esperia
📅 Every year, on 30 May
Esperia celebrates Saint Clinius the Abbot on 30 May.
The name was chosen in 1867, when Roccaguglielma and San Pietro merged into a single comune: Hesperus, the star, is also the name by which the ancient Greeks called the Italian peninsula. Before that the village was Roccaguglielma, after the castrum that the Norman William of Blosseville had built in the twelfth century on Monte Cecubo, gathering the scattered population inside it: it served to control the pass that led from Pontecorvo and Aquino to Gaeta without going through Cassino.
In the church of Santa Maria Maggiore the wooden statue of the patron, San Clino Abate, is said to take the features of Clino Roselli, a man of Esperia who took an active part in the Parthenopean Republic and was executed by the Bourbons in 1799. Esperia lay on the Gustav line, and it was precisely here that the front was broken through: for the violence suffered by the population that followed, the marocchinate, the comune holds the gold medal for civil merit. The village also gives its name to a breed of pony, raised in the wild and never kept in a stable.
